Luke 24:44-53
Waiting for It

Sermon – May 21 Ascension Sunday – GOLD

Acts 1:1-11; Ps 47 or 93; Eph 1:15-23; Lk 24:44-53

We have now arrived at the final Eastertide Sunday before Pentecost where we celebrate The Ascension of the Lord. Ascension Day was this past Thursday. It is 40 days after Jesus’ resurrection. These 40 days PLUS the 10 days of waiting for the Holy Spirit are the 50 days of Easter. It is quite astounding what all can happen in 50 days! According to N T Scholars, the Gospel of Luke and the book of the Acts of the Apostles are written by the same author and follow each other sequentially. The Gospel of Luke tells of Jesus ascent to his Father in heaven – and the Book of Acts  dovetails into telling us the “rest of the story.”  The Gospel of Luke author concludes with a reference to the coming of the ‘Promise of the Spirit’ and then begins the Book of Acts where we will hear about the fulfillment of the promise.
